Chemical systems involving multiple phases are very common in chemical industry. Design and optimization of these systems is difficult as detailed knowledge of the fluid dynamics in the system is often required. This lab allows students to investigate the fluid dynamics of a real liquid-solid, gas-liquid, or gas-liquid-solid system.

Figure 1 presents a schematic diagram of the experimental fluidization system. Figure 2 is an actual picture of the system. The system is a vertical PVC column, containing multiple pressure taps separated in 10cm intervals. Solid particles may be added at the top of the column: 1.2mm and 5mm spherical beads are available.
